It's a bit of a Sccam!

During the second half of the 90's Glasgow's top comic get together was the SCCAM Club. (Scottish Cartoonist and Comic artists Mermbership.)
Held in Blackfriars Bar in the Merchant city, the monthly event was a well organised occasion.
Founding Members Tommy Sommerville and Ranald MacColl attracted some of the best talent in the scene as special guests over the 5 years it ran. Opening night saw Will Eisner in attendance, other guests over the years were Cam Kennedy, Gilbert Shelton, Bob Godfrey, Dave Gibbons, Mark Millar and Grant Morrison. That's not including regular attendees like Frank Quietly, Robbie Morrison and Colin Macneil from 2000ad fame and Dave Alexander, Somme (Electric Soup/Viz) Malky McCormick and Kettle and Christine of newspaper cartooning fame and French cartoonist Tanitoc, and Lorna Miller who were pioneers of their own new and distinctive brand of comic art.
Tommy's son Christopher went on to create The Scottish Cartoon Art Studio in '99 of which Tommy himself is still a resident member.

The wee flyer above was done by myself for Cam's appearance in '96.

  1. Ooh, that's a very cool Star Wars scene. Love the Star Wars theme that seems to be sprouting up all over blogger.

  2. Good stuff - from round about the time the Glasgow Comics Massive started to spread out and rule the world.

Anyone up for identifying all the faces in that group photo? I assume I can spot Quitely and Morrison to the right of the chap in the middle but is that a young Mark Millar that Grant is pointing to?

  3. Eeesh, this all looks OLD! I know I was at the Eisner one, 'cos me and Vin talked to the great man. An experience I look back on very fondly to this day. I also remember bumping into Roger Kettle there, the man who convinced me ( aged 15 ) that drawing comics was a good idea. I remember Erskine being there too...he had hair then!

  4. Mark Millar is "A pint and two memberships"
The guy front and centre is Tommy Sommerville who was editor and artist on Electric Soup. Behind his head with the glasses is Dave Alexander of Electric Soup and now Viz. Directly to his right with glasses is a very young Jamie Grant (We 3/ All star Superman). Just to the left of the Spirit is Ranald (Brace yourself) MacColl, a multi talented designer, writer cartoonist and co founder of the club with Tommy.

  5. Thanks for that - I like the way the A-SS team form a neat little triangle there with a lady's face in the middle, who knew what greatness lay in heir future? Probably Grant Morrison, I suppose.
